TRUST is the Foundation of Employee Engagement.

“Bida-Bida.” Two words that can quietly destroy a culture of innovation.

Recently, I learned about a company where employees who suggest improvements are often labeled “bida-bida.”

For those outside the Philippines, bida-bida is a Filipino expression often used to describe someone who is “trying to be the hero,” “showing off,” or “trying to impress the boss.”

Unfortunately, in some workplaces, it is used against employees who simply choose to speak up.

Think about the unintended message this sends:

“Don’t suggest ideas.”
“Don’t ask questions.”
“Just do your job.”

When employees hear this often enough, something dangerous happens.

They stop participating.

Not because they no longer care.
But because they no longer feel safe.

This is why I believe employee engagement is much deeper than satisfaction surveys or company activities.

It begins with TRUST.

When people trust their leaders, they feel psychologically SAFE.

When they feel safe, they participate.
When they participate, they share IDEAS.

And those ideas become the improvements that move the business forward.

That’s why the Designed to Win™ System is built on a simple principle:

Trust creates safety. Safety unlocks participation. Participation generates ideas.

The people closest to the work often know the work best.

– Operators see waste.
– Technicians know what keeps breaking.
– Engineers understand process limitations.
– Frontline employees hear customer frustrations every day.

The next breakthrough is rarely hidden in another strategy meeting.

It is often already inside your organization, waiting for someone to say:

“I have an idea.”

As leaders, our responsibility is not to have all the answers.

Our responsibility is to create a culture where every employee feels safe to contribute.

Because ideas should never be labeled as “bida-bida.”

They should be recognized as ownership.
They should be celebrated as initiative.
They should be transformed into projects that create measurable business results.

Organizations don’t lose because they run out of ideas.

They lose because they unknowingly create cultures where people stop sharing them.

Let’s build organizations where every voice matters, every idea counts, and every employee has the opportunity to help move the business dial.
